7:30 Program – The Wegmans/FLT Passport Project - September 8 (Wednesday)

Recently, the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, in conjunction with Wegmans, Eastern Mountain Sports, Monro Muffler Brake, and Hickory Hill Family Camping Resort, embarked upon a "Passport" project to introduce people to the Finger Lakes Trail.

Gene Bavis, the Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, will speak about the Passport Program and the Finger Lakes Trail in general. Copies of the Passport Booklet will be available for those attending.   Read more.

6:30 Workshop – A Social Hour for our High Summit Society Honorees

There won't be an Education workshop for September's meeting. Instead, come enjoy a social hour where you will have an opportunity to meet and congratulate our new High Summit Honor Society inductees and enjoy a slice of celebratory cake. This year's honorees: Mary Warchocki, Gary DeWitt, and Steve Tryon.

Daytrippers - Hemlock Lake (South end)
This is a nice paddle through the inlet of the lake. There is often wonderful wildlife to be seen and often an eagle will grace with his presence.

Directions: We'll put in at the boat launch at the south end of Hemlock Lake. Travel south on Rt. 15A. After the village of Hemlock, Hemlock Lake comes up on the right. Travel the distance of the lake (about 8 miles) and watch for the boat launch signs on the right. Turn right then an immediate right to a dirt/gravel road. The parking and boat launch is down this lane.

All paddles are 10:00 -12:00. These are leisurely paddles appropriate for canoes and kayaks. We enjoy the camaraderie of the group and the wonderful scenery around us. All are welcome!!! Bring PFD, water, food is always nice, and of course your boat and paddle.

Crescent Trail - Eastern Section
We will be hiking on the Crescent Trail (orange trail) off of Lyndon Road. This section of the trail should only have mild hills. We will meet at 10:15 A.M. and start hiking at 10:30am. Meet at the Trail Head parking lot on Lyndon Road. To get to Lyndon Road, take 490e to exit 26 to Ny31E(Palmyra Rd) left onto Ayrault Rd. Go east for 3.8 mile and turn left(north) on to Lyndon Rd. Go .4 mile to the Parking lot on the east side of the road. Bring a lunch, we will be eating on the trail.

Hemlock Lake- Full moon paddle
Join us to howl at the moon! We are suppose to have a full moon (Autumnal Equinox) so we are starting later than normal...7:30 pm launch from the north east boat launch along the eastern shore of the lake. Along with the normal gear you should have a Coast Guard approved 360 degree white light and/or a green/red bow light.

Northville-Placid Trail Backpacking Trip
Join us on September 23-26 as we explore approximately 30 miles of the Northville-Placid trail. The backpacking trip will explore the trail traveling north to south beginning at Wakely Dam traveling through what is thought to be the wildest part of the Adirondacks ending in Piseco. We will experience the beautiful Adirondacks crossing brooks, sighting beaver dams, catching glimpses of high cliffs and cascading waterfalls. We will lodge at designated camp sites or lean-to's where there are side adventures off the main trail for those interested. This is an advanced backpacking trip as we will hike approximately 10miles per day which will include steep grades and pitches. We will begin our trip Thursday late morning, tenting the night at Wakely Dam and hitting the trail after a camp breakfast on Friday, hiking out on Sunday when we will head back home.

Daytrippers - West River at Naples
This is a lovely paddle in the fall (any season for that matter). We'll put in at the end of the lake, paddle to the west river and then down the Naples Creek. The fall colors are usually spectacular on this paddle!!!!

Directions: From RT 5/20 going towards Canandaigua, turn right on Rt. 64 south. Rt 64 runs into Rt 21. Take Rt. 21 down the hill to the lake (lake on Left). Go past marina on left and watch for DEC parking lot. If you get to Naples – you've gone too far!!!

All paddles are 10:00 -12:00. These are leisurely paddles appropriate for canoes and kayaks. We enjoy the camaraderie of the group and the wonderful scenery around us. All are welcome!!! Bring PFD, water, food is always nice, and of course your boat and paddle.

Finger Lakes Branch Trail-Conservation Trail series #12
This hike is suited for those looking for a little longer hike, than the usual local Sunday day hike. We will meet at the Home Depot parking lot in Gates at 8:00 am. We will leave at 8:15 am to car pool to the Sardinia, NY area, where we will hike ~10 miles (1000 ft of elevation gain) on the Conservation Trail, a branch of the FLT (Map Ct5 access 5 Genesee Rd. to access 1 Gooseneck Rd).

Daytrippers - Wide Waters/Newark
We had to cancel this trip in the summer so we will do it in the fall. There were a few folks who expressed an interest in this particular location. This should be a very nice paddle!!!

Directions: Traveling east on Rt. 31, towards Newark, go past Port Gibson sign. Turn left into Widewaters Canal Park. This is across from the car dealership. The park is just before Whitbeck Road on the north side of Rt. 31.

Today we paddled a portion of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal that obviously flows between these two Finger Lakes. The water was clear and had a nice current. the weather was spectacular and the company was, too. We launched from a fairly new boat vendor called Fuzzy Guppies located at the Waterloo Harbor Campground just west of Route 96 on Route 5&20 in Waterloo.

August 26

Braddock Bay
Tonight was another adventure with the younger members. We had 16 paddlers for a wonderful adventure up on of the creeks. Joe from Braddocks Bay Paddlsports stayed open late for us and rented boats and gear to those who needed it. Go to see some wildlife......and a couple of boats that were magnetized.....you know who you are.....

Afterwards we went to the Braddocks Bay Inn for dinner and to celebrate almost everyone staying dry......Carter had the uncontrolable desire to practice a wet exit....so he did!

Round Pond - Mendon Ponds Park
Tonight Dave Curtis of Hemlock Canoe brought a trailer full of canoes for a demo night of his wonderful boats. The weather held up and it was cool but nice with a wonderful sunset. Along with trying out a number of canoes we saw a beaver, woodpecker, geese.....a scuba diver....and best of all a member from Buffalo came down early and cooked a wonderful roast beef for us all as well as supplying us with a wonderful desert afterwards.

I was the only ADkr.....all other participants were from Hemlock Canoe.

High Peaks Challenge
Our group set out on Friday morning for the Keene Valley, arriving mid-afternoon. We rented an ADK club leanto by Johns Brook Lodge which worked out very nicely. Saturday morning we awoke to temperatures in the 30s but the mercury creeped up a little as we began our day. Saturday's goals were 5 peaks; Basin, Saddleback, Gothics, Armstrong, and Upper Wolfjaw. With the temperature in the 60s all day and sunny skies, we had perfect conditions. So good that several of us tacked on Lower Wolfjaw for a total of 6 peaks. With lower Wolfjaw, it was about a 13 hour day. Everyone slept well that night. Sunday, we headed out for a brunch in town and back home.

July 16-18

Colvin, Nippletop and Dial
Will Soles, Patrick Rault and Eric Boxer set out on a Friday morning and headed to the hills for the first Younger Members' backpack in "a while". An unexpectedly delicious lunch stopover in Holland Patent at Grande's is highly recommended for future trips. Our plan had been to camp near the Ausable Club trailhead, and we agreed that Round Pond looked ideal. The Round Pond camp thus became a mini-backpack as we started out at about 6pm from the car with light packs for one night. Once at camp, we each got the idea to go for a swim in the beckoning waters of Round Pond. We quickly realized that swimming in round pond would require walking out about a hundred feet before the water was waist deep. Definitely worth it. Great campsite.

On Saturday morning, we headed up the road two miles to the Ausable trailhead, loaded up packs again, and started up the Ausable River, hitting several waterfalls along the way to the Indian Head lookout. It's hard to describe how awe-inspiring this view is, but let's just say it's one of the great places in the state to take it in.

After setting up camp near Gill Brook, we decided we had enough energy to continue up with light packs to Mt Colvin. We hiked part of the way to Colvin with a group of young campers, most of whom were climbing their first peak. It was fun to share that experience with them and see how much a bunch on city kids with no experience were capable of, but also a little painful to see the inexperienced counselors growing frustrated. Hiking up Gill brook again in the morning, this time with full packs, was slightly more difficult than the day before. This was compounded by our 730 am start from camp extra water weight after a rainy night. We reached Elk Pass shortly, and then made the arduous ascent of Nippletop, where we were the first to summit that day. We had been expecting a slightly different form of the summit, but it was explained that it gets its name from the view at Elk Lake.

The trail down the ridge to Dial didn't look promising for views and we began to think that Dial was just named because someone wanted the recognition. The views and napping potential of the summit block on Dial were a pleasant surprise to us then, even if not well distinguished by elevation. We completed the loop hiking out over Bears Den mtn and the Noonmark shoulder back to the golf course.

After a long day of hiking, we made it down to the Noonmark Diner by 4pm for outdoor BBQ on the back deck where the 19th hole had been waiting all along.
