Try out canoes and kayaks on Hundred Acre Pond. Boats are provided by Bay Creek Paddling Center, Braddock Bay Paddlesports, Eastern Mountain Sports, Hemlock Canoe Works, and Oak Orchard Canoe & Kayak. Ann Flatley will demonstrate some kayak paddling techniques for the everyday paddler. 10:00 Beginning compass. Barb Brenner and Lydia D'Amato take the mystery out of how to effectively use a compass, take a bearing, and use a bearing. 10:00 Planning a family hike. Jim Tappon of Pack, Paddle, Ski will discuss planning, preparation, practice, and packing for a successful family trip. 10:00 First Aid for dogs on the trail. Deni Charpentier will talk about first aid on the trail for your 'best friend'. 10:00 Stove primer and cooking demo. Gary Loria of EMS will show various types of backpack stoves and demonstrate freeze-dried meals. 10:00 Introduction to GPS. Join Emily Pleger of EMS and Robin Krebs of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County for a hands-on introduction to Global Positioning Systems. GPS units will be provided for 20 participants or bring your own. 10:30 For women only. Meagan Harris will talk about issues specific to women on the trail. 10:30 Dealing with bears. 'Griz' Caudle will show how to protect your food from animals, including the use of bear canisters. 10:30 Lightweight backpacking. Rich and Sue Freeman of Footprint Press will show how to cut the weight on your back when you hit the trails. 11:00 Nordic Walking. Burn more calories while reducing pressure on your joints. Join Lindy Spiezer, a certified Leki USA Nordic Walking professional, for stretching, cardio-enhanced walking, and games using poles. Poles provided. Brisk hike to Devil's Bathtub. 11:00 Changing a flat in the woods. Join Harry deLahunta to learn how to save a bike trip when you develop that dreaded flat. 11:00 Dressing for the trail. Al Bushnell will talk about the importance of what to wear and bring when you hit the trail. 11:00 Packing a kayak. Mike Vance will demonstrate how to pack a kayak for extended camping trips. 11:30 Emergency bike repairs. Bob DeRoo, owner of Pedallers Bike Shop, will take from where Harry left off in talking about emergency bike repairs in the field. 11:30 Planning a distant trip. Karen Hibbard and Ken Harbison will discuss trip planning, with examples from trips to the Wonderland Trail, the Grand Canyon, and the White Mountains. 11:30 Choosing a tent. Scott and Dave Hurlburt of Get Out and Stay Out will tell all about picking a new tent, plus the 'care and feeding' of your tent. 11:30 Packing a canoe. Gary DeWitt will demonstrate how to properly pack a canoe for an extended trip. 12:00 Bike maintenance. Bob DeRoo of Pedallers Bike Shop will talk about preventative maintenance. 12:00 Packing a pack. Mitch Osur of Snow Country will demonstrate how to distribute items in a pack for various situations. 12:00 Float your boat. Sue & Rich Freeman of Footprint Press will present their new books on canoeing and kayaking in the Finger Lakes and Western NY. Learn the best places for wildlife encounters, for seclusion, for interesting views, for families, etc. 12:00 Orienteering hike. Jim Tappon of Pack, Paddle, Ski and the Rochester Orienteering Club will lead an orienteering 'hike'. 12:30 New developments in bikes. Bob DeRoo of Pedallers Bike Shop discusses new technology in bike design. 12:30 Dehydrating food. Margaret Reek will show how to make delicious snacks and trail meals and how to preserve the garden's bounty using your oven or a food dehydrator. 12:30 Picking a pack. Scott and Dave Hurlburt of Get Out and Stay Out present the basics of picking the right pack for your needs. 1:00 Commuting by bicycle. Dick Burns will discuss motivation, clothing and equipment, route selection, bicycle parking, showering, and changing clothes. 1:00 Introduction to GPS. Knots for camping, boating, and packing will be covered. 1:00 New boating laws. Learn about new laws that affect paddlers on the Lake and near the Fast Ferry, and about the selection and proper use of PFDs. 1:00 Butterfly Hike. Bill McCleary of the Rochester Butterfly Club will lead a field trip to locate and identify butterflies. Meet at the Lookout Shelter. Hike lasts approximately 2 hours. 1:30 Long distance cycling. Mike Seager will discuss riding centuries and more, training, equipment, hydration, nutrition, and long-distance touring. 1:30 Games for kids, 'Project Wild'. Tricia Cook, a Rochester teacher, will lead fun, interactive and experimental games developed by Project Wild to help children learn about the outdoors and the environment. 1:30 Boot fitting. George Scherer from Sea Kayak Rochester will demonstrate proper kayak self-rescue techniques. 2:30 Project Wild: Introduction to training methods. Annie O'Reilly, a Project Wild educator, will talk about teaching outdoor environmental interactive games for kids. 2:30 Geocaching. Margaret and Ken Reek introduce this new high tech scavenger hunt. Bring your GPS. 2:30 Choosing a tent. Ken Altfather from Baycreek Paddlesports will demonstrate how to solo paddle a tandem canoe. 3:00 ADK Quest, Fire towers, and Kids on the Trail Challenges. Ken Harbison will illustrate these ADK programs designed to encourage visiting diverse parts of the Adirondacks. 3:00 East Esker hike. Joanne Mitchell will lead a moderate 45-minute hike over hills on the East Esker trail. 3:00 Beginning compass.
