Volunteer Responsibilities
With the expo a week away I am in the final stages of the planning of
the event. Many of you have stepped up to assist me in this years
event but for some people it will be their first time participating.
Many of you have asked what your responsibilities will be so this
message is to provide you with this information.
Basically there are two functions that I have signed people up for.
One is being a safety boater and the other is manning the beach sign
in desk. Both of these tasks are required because there will be at
least six boat vendors on the beach with approximately 10 boats each.
It is up to each boat vendor to provide the boats, paddles and
required PFD's for each participant. They will also have to supply
their own personnel to assist the participants getting geared up and
into a boat. We will have the beach ropped off to limit access to the
beach area which is required for insurance reasons and we will also
have the water marked of so paddlers do not wonder beyond the point
that we can assist them.
Safety boaters
As I briefly discribed above the safety boaters function will be to
assist the paddlers in case of emergencies. This may include showing
them a proper paddle stroke, or potentially a water rescue if someone
flips over. We will have three safety boats out each hour so even if
you are not the best rescuer you will have assistance in a hurry.
Most of the time it is talking with the participants about the
different types of boats, paddle strokes and chasing down people who
paddle beyond the markers we have placed in the water.
Beach sign-in desk
The people who are assigned to the sign in desk have the task of
hearding the participants through the designated areas to the desk
where they must sign a release of liability form for each boat vendor
and one for ADK. This is required by each companies insurance company
and is a required task to get onto the beach. Once each form is
signed we will then place a tyvek wrist band onto the participants
wrist which will allow them full access to the beach and the boats.
They cannot be allowed admittance to the beach for any reason unless
they sign all the forms and get the wrist band.
Volunteer Sign-in (and food)
Your reward for assisting in this effort will be a hot meal and a
drink provided by this years food vendor, Foodlink. They are a not
for profit organization that provides food to schools and to the many
food banks in the area that then provide food to the needy.
When you arrive at Expo you need to sign in and report to the
volunteer table. There you will recieve a name tag and a voucher for
the food. You must provide Foodlink with the voucher in order to get
the food free, otherwise you will have to pay for the meal.
Please try to report to your respective volunteer post whether it be
sign in desk or the water approximately 15 minutes before your
scheduled time to get any last minute instructions or required gear.
If anyone still has any questions please do not hesitate in
contacting me ASAP.
Again, thank you all for your help and lets all pray for beautiful
weather like we had last year!
