Next Meeting – January 14, 2009

7:30 Program – Timothy McDonnell: Formation of the Adirondack Mountains & other Marvels of our u-NY-que Landscape

Timothy McDonnell will take us through a re-creation of the marvels of New York State geography, showing the forces that formed our u-NY-que landscape, the particular legacy left by the glaciers of the Ice Age, and how they enabled New York to become the Empire State. He will touch on some of the lesser known ways that these features impacted the social and economic development of the State.   Read more.

6:30 Workshop – Current conservation and environmental issues

Join us as Jim Townsend of our local chapter, presents major conservation and environmental issues, currently under review in the Adirondack State Park. Because of his knowledge and expertise, Jim was appointed to the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) by Gov. Pataki, during his administration. He will also brief us on conservation issues that are affecting the Monroe County area.

Hiking on Cross-Country Ski Trails

This reminder from our friends at Rochester Cross Country Ski Foundation:

In recent years, we have seen a DRAMATIC increase in the number of people that think nothing of walking right down the middle of groomed and designated ski trails at both the venues that we support (Spencer and Mendon Ponds Park). Walking on XC ski trails, especially without snowshoes, basically un-does the grooming that we work so hard to accomplish.

You and your group can help us by assuring that all the ADK hikers in your activity wear snowshoes, utilize the single-track trail network as much as possible, and if snowshoeing on a ski trail, walk single file on the far left side (opposite any classic tracks that we typically set on the rights sides of one-way ski trails.

Polar Bear Conservation – An In-Field Perspective
by Kim E. Goppert
Kara Masaschi, polar bear keeper and Rocky Coast supervisor at Seneca Park Zoo, shared with us her love for these wonderful "sea bears". We learned about polar bear biology, conservation, threats to these amazing predators and even the "expectant" status of Seneca Park's zoo resident polar bear, Aurora. Kara's photos and stories were from her own experiences up in Churchill, Manitoba where she has spent several weeks for the last 3 years as an in-field lecturer. I had the pleasure after Kara's presentation to witness her interaction with 3 young girls who not only were animal lovers but were in awe of her position as a keeper. They even asked for her autograph. Kara's wonderful presentation skills and personal stories interjected along the way made for a great program.
