Paddles

[Paddle] Weekly Paddles
Monday mornings:
The Monday Daytripper group is for paddlers of all ability levels who want a leisurely paddle in a variety of waterways and Lakes that are fun, relaxed and scenic. They are appropriate for canoes and kayaks.
Tues night sea kayak training:
Requirements: sea kayak, skirt, lights, PFD, appropriate clothing. While we are happy to accomodate people of various skill and speed levels this paddle is for people who want a good workout and who would like to hone their kayaking skills, including occasional rescue practice and rough water. If the group is large enough we will break into groups by desired pace. If we don't have the numbers to safely do this (ADK requires groups of at least three) the slower paddlers will take a straight-line lead and those who wish to paddle faster can zig-zag behind. This method keeps everyone within sight and "help range" in the event someone has problems. We have a six-thirty launch time and will on occasion stay out after dark so please bring your lights. Coast guard rules only require a 360 degree white light. To a motor boat glancing your direction (and the occasional glance is how most of them navigate) a white light will not be distinguishable from the many shore lights along our paddling route; you will essentially be invisible. A red/green bow light makes you instantly recognizable as a boat. You choose. Even in the middle of summer the lake routinely turns over and the water temperature can be 50 or below. Dress appropriately for the water temperature.
Contact Mark Rakestraw for further details.
Thursday night paddles:
Thursday night relaxed paddles will start sometime in May. Peg Warrick, Pete Latham and Charlie Helman will be leading relaxed paddles at many different locations in the area. A schedule of locations will be available in the near future.
For further information please check the paddling schedule or contact Charlie Helman at ;.

[Away] [Younger] [Home] Labor Day Weekend Backpacking/Camping - Update
Join us for the last long weekend of the summer for some backpacking or camping in the High Peaks region and experience the wilderness, mountains and lakes of New York!

The main goal here is to have as much fun as possible over the course of the three-day weekend! If you also enjoy backpacking, this trip would be just that. Swimming in mountain lakes? Hiking up 1 or 2 (or even three? can we do one each day?) 46er peaks? Giving up routine comforts for a few days to enjoy the wilderness? SOUND FUN?

The plan now is to do a one-way through hike, with car shuttle, from the north Giant Mountain trailhead to the Elk Lake trailhead via Giant Mountain (4627') and Dix Mountain (4857'). Total miles are 24 over the three days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday). There are two lean-twos along the way in strategic places, abundant water and amazing views. Alternatively, if not enough peole are interested in backpacking, we can camp near the road and still do dayhikes up both Giant and Dix (Dix would be a long one). Or, there is an option to do just one night of backpacking, if weather becomes a concern.

Parts of this 24 mile route could be challenging for beginners, but not too difficult to overcome if you bring enough enthusiasm. Other gear required would include a comfortable backpack large enough to fit a panda bear inside, summer-weight sleeping bag, thermarest, tent arrangements and two water bottles (full of enthusiasm??).

We will leave friday afternoon, make the five-hour drive, and camp just before the traihead. We would emerge from the woods on Monday in time to get Bar-B-Que on the deck at the Noonmark diner and make it back to Rochester by 10pm.

Those who are definitely going will meet on Monday, August 30th @ 7pm at the Old Toad to figure out final details. In the meanwhile, please contact Eric to say you're in, or just say that you think you may more fun ideas.

7:30 Program – The Wegmans/FLT Passport Project

Recently, the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, in conjunction with Wegmans, Eastern Mountain Sports, Monro Muffler Brake, and Hickory Hill Family Camping Resort, embarked upon a "Passport" project to introduce people to the Finger Lakes Trail. Twelve hikes between Letchworth State Park and I-81 were selected. Because we hope to attract families and new hikers, we have kept the hikes fairly short, ranging in distance from a mile to five miles. To encourage participation our sponsors have agreed to provide discount coupons for those who complete at least 4 of the 12 hikes. Those who complete at least 10 hikes will be eligible to receive a larger prize drawn each October. The FLT will give a special patch to anyone who completes 4 hikes.

Gene Bavis, the Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, will speak about the Passport Program and the Finger Lakes Trail in general. Copies of the Passport Booklet will be available for those attending.

6:30 Workshop – A Social Hour for our High Summit Society Honorees

There won't be an Education workshop for September's meeting. Instead, come enjoy a social hour where you will have an opportunity to meet and congratulate our new High Summit Honor Society inductees and enjoy a slice of celebratory cake. This year's honorees: Mary Warchocki, Gary DeWitt, and Steve Tryon.
