Join Judy Immesoete and Donna Dinse for a relaxing weekend of car camping,
swimming and hiking. We will leave Rochester early Friday afternoon arriving at
Lake Eaton Campground, which is located near Long Lake, in time for a pot-luck
dinner.
After an early breakfast Saturday morning at the campground we
will hike Owls Head Mountain. The summit has a nonaccessible fire tower but
offers a spectacular 180 degree view from its cliff face of Blue Mountain as
well as some of the more eastern high peaks. On the way back to the campground
there is a nice sandy beach for swimming on the west side of Lake Eaton.
The
round trip is approximately 8 miles from the campground with a little over 1000
feet in elevation gain. Saturday dinner will be at a local restaurant.
On
Sunday, after breakfast and breaking camp, we will drive to near by Buttermilk
Falls. Before heading home we will visit the Adriondak Museum in Blue Mountain.
A deposit of $11.00 is required. The trip is limited to 12. Some loaner camping
equipment is available.
For more information please contact Judy Immesoete at 924-1660 or .
| August 8-10 | West Canada Weekend
Explore our Chapter's adopted wild land, the West Canada Lakes Wilderness, in
an easy to moderate backpack trip. We will leave Rochester on Friday afternoon
and car camp Friday evening at Sled Harbor, near the trailhead (off Perkins
Clearing Road). On Saturday, we will hike approximately 5 to 6 miles to Cedar
Lakes, where we will set up camp.
We're going to have a special guest on this
trip--Marty Dodge, who is Professor of Environmental Conservation at Finger
Lakes Community College. (Some of you may remember Marty's spectacular Alaska
presentation at a chapter meeting this past winter.) Marty will be acting as
"guest ecologist" for the group, pointing out aspects of the West Canada that
might otherwise be overlooked.
We will explore the beautiful Cedar Lakes area
on Saturday, and as we do so, we'll use the opportunity to gather information
on trail conditions, lean-to conditions, wildlife, litter, etc. to report back
to the main Club and to the DEC, which is developing a unit management plan for
this wilderness area. (Please note, however, that this is not a work
trip, i.e., no trail maintenance.) On Sunday, we will hike out, returning to
our vehicles by mid-day.
To sign up for this trip contact Dave Mundie at 264-0386 or
. | August 8-10 | Bald Mountain and Woodhull Firetower Backpack
This is a nice trip for those looking to backpack and climb two modest
mountains with fire towers, Bald Mountain and Woodhull. We will leave on
Friday morning and arrive at Old Forge at midday. We climb Bald Mountain
(elevation 2350 ft.) which should have a nice view of the Fulton Lake chain.
Friday afternoon, we drive to the trailhead and hike to Remsen Falls. On
Saturday, we hike to and climb Woodhull Mountain (elevation 2362 ft.). Then, we
hike onto the Woodhull Lake leanto (a palace of a leanto). Sunday morning, we
hike out past Bear Lake. We can use day packs for the 4 mile round trip Bald
Mountain climb. Aside from that, the total backpacking distance will be 21
miles. The backpacking should be considered moderate. Saturday, we hike about
10 miles however we can take smaller packs up Woodhull mountain since we return
by the same route.
Contact Jim Luening at 387-0256 or
for information and signup. | August 15-17 Class D Dayhike | Whiteface and Esther, Catamount
We will drive to Upper Jay on Friday afternoon and stay at a motel. On
Saturday, we will do a traverse of Whiteface from the ASR trailhead to Connery
Pond for a total distance of ca. 13 miles. We will climb Esther on the way up.
Weather-permitting, expect to see some grand lake scenery on the descent (Lake
Placid itself!).
The plan for Sunday is to climb Catamount (3.6 miles
roundtrip), a well-kept secret of the locals, before driving home. Catamount
has a rocky open summit and a "chimney" that is fun for people, but not for
dogs.
Deposit required.

| August 21-26 Car Camping and Class D Day Hikes | Northern New Hampshire White Mountains
We will drive to NH on Thursday morning and set up car camping near the
northern end of the Whites. Over the next three or four days we will climb
Cabot, Waumbek, the Wildcats, Carter Dome and North Twin. In between we will
have hot showers and eat at some nice restaurants. The extra day is in case we
have some very bad weather. The listed hikes will cover nearly 40 miles and
15,000 feet of vertical. We will return to Rochester on Tuesday 8/26 at the
latest.
Contact Joe Roth at 671-8458,
for more information. | August 22-24 | Johns Brooks Lodge Trip
We will meet in the Garden parking lot in Keene Valley on Friday early
in the afternoon and hike the easy 3.5 miles to Johns Brook Lodge.
Breakfast, a trail lunch and dinner are included. I reserved one room
that sleeps four. If the trip fills beyond four, there may be bunks
available in other rooms. A $65 deposit is required. Estimated total
stay is estimated by JBL to be $125. Cancellation or full payment must
follow by no later than 6/14.
Now for the fun stuff. On Saturday, the
plan is to hike Saddleback and Basin. If time allows, we can explore
Johns Brook and do some bushwhacking near the lodge. Please email me
soon if you are interested, the four bunk room could fill up fast.

On Saturday, we will leave Rochester early and drive to Gorham, NH. The
following morning, we will shuttle to Andover, ME and begin the hike.
Southbound, the trail goes over Bald Pate and Old Speck before driving into the
nastiest mile of the whole AT –
Mahoosuc Notch. Afterward, the rugged Mahoosuc
Range is characterized by extensive boardwalks through open alpine bogs. The
trip ends at Gorham. This is a very difficult 40-mile section with more than
12,000 feet of climbing, so previous backpacking experience is absolutely
required.

RWMS – Another Club for Winter Backpacking
The Rochester Winter Mountaineering Society is an informal group of
climbers who find winter the ideal time to explore and climb the
mountains of the northeastern United States. We encourage those
interested in joining the society to attend one of the winter
mountaineering workshops (see below). The number of participants on any
trip will be limited at the leader's discretion. Call early to avoid
disappointment.
Experienced backpackers who are properly equipped and in excellent
physical condition are invited to join us on an introductory trip. For
2008 there are two introductory trips in January.
