Irondequoit Creek (Monroe)

Segment: Southern end of Irondequiot Bay to Ellison Park
Length: 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip)
Difficulty: Class 1

Maps: Delorme page number 72
USGS (7.5”)

How to get there:

From Rochester take Route 404 East. Park at the pull off on the North side of Route 404 near the Southeast corner of Irondequiot Bay.
Description:
The trip starts at the pull off and heads a short way west to the mouth of Irondequoit Creek. Here the creek flows into Irondequiot Bay from a marshy area. Paddle up the creek from the bay, passing under a low bridge (known as Float Bridge) which carries Route 404 over the creek. The correct route through the marsh may be somewhat confusing as the creek has numerous deadends. The main channel is generally towards the bluffs on the east side of the marsh. Beware of the large Canadian Swans which nest in the marsh. They are very aggressive and will attack if provoked. After leaving the marsh the creek becomes a single channel with grassy banks. It now passes through Monroe County’s Ellison Park after first passing under a low bridge carrying Browncroft Blvd over the creek. A short while later another low bridge is encountered where Blossom Road passes over the creek. On the east side of the creek is the historic Daisy Flower Mill restaurant. The turn around point is just a short way further upstream where the stream becomes too shallow to paddle.
