Labor Day Weekend Backpacking/Camping - Update Join us for the last long weekend of the summer for some backpacking
or camping in the High Peaks region and experience the wilderness,
mountains and lakes of New York!
The main goal here is to have as much fun as possible over the course of
the three-day weekend! If you also enjoy backpacking, this trip would be
just that. Swimming in mountain lakes? Hiking up 1 or 2 (or even three? can
we do one each day?) 46er peaks? Giving up routine comforts for a few days
to enjoy the wilderness? SOUND FUN?
The plan now is to do a one-way through hike, with car shuttle, from the
north Giant Mountain trailhead to the Elk Lake trailhead via Giant Mountain
(4627') and Dix Mountain (4857'). Total miles are 24 over the three days
(Saturday, Sunday, Monday). There are two lean-twos along the way in
strategic places, abundant water and amazing views.
Alternatively, if not enough peole are interested in backpacking, we can
camp near the road and still do dayhikes up both Giant and Dix (Dix would
be a long one). Or, there is an option to do just one night of backpacking,
if weather becomes a concern.
Parts of this 24 mile route could be challenging for beginners, but not too
difficult to overcome if you bring enough enthusiasm. Other gear required
would include a comfortable backpack large enough to fit a panda bear
inside, summer-weight sleeping bag, thermarest, tent arrangements and two
water bottles (full of enthusiasm??).
We will leave friday afternoon, make the five-hour drive, and camp just
before the traihead. We would emerge from the woods on Monday in time to
get Bar-B-Que on the deck at the Noonmark diner and make it back to
Rochester by 10pm.
Those who are definitely going will meet on Monday, August 30th @ 7pm at
the Old Toad to figure out final details. In the meanwhile, please contact
Eric to say you're in, or just say that you think you may more fun ideas.
